And drawing back from my own (fairly subtle) issues for a moment, could e-counselling be the answer to the mental health problems intensifying amongst under-30s? Skype and the internet offers a distance from your counsellor that may not be useful.”
In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs rather than face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that concerns Dr Balick.
” My worry is that it’s happening more and more for financial reasons, instead of because it’s what’s best for individuals. If it’s rolled out simply to conserve cash and there aren’t critical concerns being inquired about these services, that’s bad. However then, I’m always really sceptical of individuals who are either really extremely pro or really extremely against online mental health care. It’s a case of asking the ideal questions.”
